Chapter 20

Once they were in the car and out of the parking garage, Diego glanced at Mackenzie. “You saw the eye roll, I assume?”

“Oh, yeah.” She grinned. “Jo fits right in with the rest of Jessica’s gang.”

“Yeah, she’s good,” he admitted. “Mel has been raving about what a quick study she is.”

“Hope she’s got a good memory,” Mackenzie said. “I can’t wait to hear what the five of them talk about.”

“Yeah. I’m interested in that, too,” he said, maneuvering past a delivery truck double-parked on the street. “You wanna eat now, or wait for Jo?”

“Let’s wait,” she said after a moment. “I’m pretty sure Jessica and her gang won’t invite Jo to eat with them. At least not tonight. This was a ‘feel her out’ drink. They’ll want to discuss her in detail once Jo leaves.”

He gave her a quick look before he returned his gaze to the road. “Yeah, I suspect you’re right. Hope Jo has a good memory.”

“Me, too.”

Fifteen minutes later they were in Mackenzie’s condo. “Be right out,” she called as she stepped into her bedroom and closed the door.

Diego watched her go, then went into the kitchen and poured Mackenzie a glass of wine. He took it into the living room and set it carefully on the coffee table, then fetched himself a glass of iced tea.

He needed to come clean tonight. Once they were in Chicago, it’d be too late. Someone there would recognize him -- it happened every time he went into the city. And Mackenzie would be hurt if she found out about him that way.

The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her.

Most people looked at him differently when they found out about his past. He didn’t think Mackenzie was that shallow, but he was still reluctant to tell her who he was.

She emerged from her room a few minutes later. She’d exchanged her suit and blouse for a pair of old jeans with ripped knees and a faded Stanford sweatshirt. He smiled. “That looks a lot more comfortable that your suit.”

She shrugged one shoulder. “No one to impress here.” She grinned. “Other than you. And I’m pretty sure you’re not so shallow that you think a business suit is more impressive than jeans and a sweatshirt.”

“Absolutely not.” He patted the couch beside him. “Come sit down. There’re some things I want to tell you.”

She frowned. “That sounds serious.”

“Not really. Something I’ve just been putting off.”

Nodding at the glass of wine, she asked, “That for me?”

“Yep.” He pushed it toward her.

“Must be serious if you think I need wine to deal with it.”

“Not at…” He stopped abruptly. Sighed. “Well, maybe. I want to tell you why I’m so secretive about what I did before I became a bodyguard.”

She swiveled to face him and picked up the wine. Took a sip. “So tell me your big secret.”

He laughed. “It’s not bad. But it’s something I don’t tell a lot of people. Everyone I work with knows, but I don’t talk about it much around casual acquaintances.
